A surge protective device, or SPD, limits brief voltage spikes. Surges can come from utility events or equipment switching inside the home. Different protection locations serve different purposes.
At the electrical panel
A properly selected and installed whole-house SPD adds protection at the electrical system level, including circuits serving hardwired equipment.

At sensitive equipment
Suitable point-of-use surge protectors can provide an additional layer for electronics. An ordinary power strip may only add outlets; check its labeling.

What is a Type 2 surge protector?
A Type 2 surge protective device is permanently connected on the load side of the service overcurrent protection. It can be installed at a suitable electrical panel. We select the device for your system and follow its installation requirements; the type number alone is not a quality ranking.
How do I know when a surge protector needs replacement?
Check the protection-status indicator as described in your device's instructions. If it shows a fault or loss of protection, contact us for an assessment. Service life depends on the device and the surges it experiences, so there is no single replacement interval for every home. Do not open the panel or device to investigate.
Do I still need plug-in surge protectors?
They can complement panel-level protection for sensitive electronics. Choose equipment suitable for the application and follow its instructions. An ordinary outlet strip is not necessarily a surge protector.
Will a whole-house surge protector stop power outages?
No. Surge protection limits brief voltage spikes; it does not supply backup electricity. If your goal is keeping equipment running when utility power fails, ask about backup power separately.
Does it protect against a direct lightning strike?
Do not rely on a whole-house surge protector as a guarantee against direct lightning damage. Surge protection and a dedicated lightning-protection system serve different roles.
Can it be added to my existing panel?
Often it can, but the panel and proposed device need to be assessed together. We will explain installation requirements and any additional work before you approve the project.
Do I need a permit?
The applicable requirements depend on the location and scope. We confirm the permit and inspection steps for your project instead of assuming that a small installation is exempt.
How long will installation take?
Timing depends on access, the existing panel and any related work. We can discuss the expected visit and any planned power interruption after reviewing the installation.
What does the warranty cover?
Coverage varies by manufacturer and model. Ask for the written device and connected-equipment terms, exclusions and any registration requirements before choosing a product.
