Automatic operation
A permanently installed generator with an automatic transfer switch starts after an outage and supplies the loads it is designed to support, including when you are away.
Consider this if: you want automatic backup and have a suitable outdoor location and fuel supply.
Manual operation
A generator inlet and compatible transfer equipment connect a suitable portable generator to selected home circuits. You position and operate the generator and manage the loads.
Consider this if: you want essential-circuit backup and are comfortable with manual setup.
Already own a generator? Share its make, model and output. A transfer switch or approved, panel-compatible interlock and inlet must match your equipment and keep generator power separate from utility power. Never feed a generator into a household outlet.
Fuel is part of the plan
For a standby generator, the right fuel choice depends on what is available at your property and what the selected equipment requires.
Connects to an available utility gas supply, so there is no on-site propane tank to refill. The meter, piping and available pressure need to support the generator along with other gas appliances.
Operation still depends on gas service remaining available.
Uses fuel stored in a tank at your property and can suit homes without natural gas service. Tank capacity, other propane appliances, placement and delivery access all need consideration.
Runtime depends on the usable fuel supply and electrical load; plan for refills during extended outages.
Know who handles the fuel work. The estimate should identify responsibility for gas piping, tank or meter changes and coordination with the fuel supplier or qualified fuel contractor. Sylvester's electrical installation scope is confirmed separately.
Tell us whether your home has natural gas or a propane tank when you request your estimate. You do not need to choose a fuel system before contacting us.

Square footage alone does not determine generator size. A load assessment considers your priorities and the starting demands of pumps, motors and heating or cooling equipment.

A generator does not automatically require a larger electrical service. If your existing equipment needs attention, explore panel replacement or 200 amp service upgrades.
Equipment availability, fuel-work coordination and required approvals also affect scheduling. Confirm the scope and timing before work begins.

It depends on the generator capacity, your electrical loads and any load-management equipment. Start by identifying what must run during an outage. Some systems serve selected circuits; others are designed for broader coverage. “Whole home” does not mean every appliance can always run at once.
A properly configured standby system with an automatic transfer switch detects an outage and starts the generator before transferring supported loads. There is a brief interruption while the system starts; it is not the same as an uninterruptible power supply.
Possibly. The generator's output and connection, the panel and the proposed transfer equipment must be compatible. A professional assessment can determine whether an inlet with a transfer switch or approved interlock is suitable. Never feed generator power into a household outlet.
Requirements depend on your municipality and project scope. Electrical work, fuel connections and placement may involve separate approvals or inspections. Confirm who is responsible for each part before installation begins.
Placement must follow the manufacturer's instructions and applicable local requirements. Windows, doors, vents and other openings matter. Portable generators must operate outdoors, away from the home and openings—not inside a garage, even with its door open. We discuss placement as part of planning the electrical connection.
